ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of divergent expression found in Debussy’s <Pantomime> and to develop methods for its application in music appreciation education. Accordingly, the study first examined the background of 19th-century France and Debussy’s <Pantomime> as well as its educational value for music appreciation. Next, the characteristics of divergent expression present in Debussy’s <Pantomime> were analyzed. Based on this, a two-session music appreciation lesson plan for high school students was developed. The research results showed that, first, Debussy’s <Pantomime> is a work that reflects the historical and cultural background of 19th-century France. Second, Debussy’s <Pantomime> expresses divergent characteristics centered on form and characters. Third, a two-session appreciation lesson plan was devised by applying the characteristics of divergent expression found in Debussy’s <Pantomime>. Through this study, it is hoped that high school students will understand the characteristics of divergent expression in Debussy’s <Pantomime> and achieve the learning objectives for music appreciation.
